The AI revolution
Since going online in November 2022, ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence chatbot, has represented a real revolution for all sectors of activity. Indeed, it is designed to hold conversations with humans in an almost natural way. It is an LLM (Large Language Model) that uses both supervised and reinforcement learning techniques to understand and answer the questions it is asked.
In general, artificial intelligence (AI) can perform a wide variety of tasks, and can be used, among other things, to:
- Facial recognition (FaceID from Apple, Face Recognition from Amazon Rekognition, FaceNet from Google),
- Voice recognition (Apple Siri, Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant),
- Automatic language translation (Google Translate, Microsoft Translator, DeepL.),
- Predictive analysis (IBM Watson, Salesforce Einstein, Google Cloud AutoML),
- Product recommendation (Amazon, Netflix, Spotify, YouTube),
- Human resources management (HireVue, Pymetrics, Eightfold.ai),
- Autonomous driving of vehicles,
- Object detection in images,
- Supply chain optimization,
- Prediction of market trends,
- Simulation of complex scenarios,
- Automation of repetitive tasks,
- Reduction of costs and human errors,
- Improve productivity,
- Automation of complex processes,
- Predicting customer behaviour,
- Technical support,
- Optimization of inventory management,
- Creation of personalized advertisements,
- Generation of product descriptions for e-commerce sites,
- Production of video content for social media,
- Diagnosis of diseases and assistance in decision-making for health professionals,
- Faster development of new drugs,
- etc
The Benefits and Challenges of Artificial Intelligence
The Benefits
For a C-level or an entrepreneur specifically, the benefits of AI are enormous. Among other things, they can allow you to:
- Improve the efficiency of your business by automating certain repetitive and time-consuming tasks, thus allowing employees to focus on more complex and higher value-added tasks.
- Make smarter and faster decisions by helping you analyze large amounts of data and identify patterns and trends that would be difficult for a human to spot.
- Personalize your product and service offerings by analyzing customer behaviour data to be able to offer them a unique experience. This can help you improve customer satisfaction and build customer loyalty.
- Optimize your processes (production, logistics, customer service, etc.) by identifying bottlenecks and inefficiencies.
- Reduce your costs by automating tasks and improving efficiency on the one hand, and on the other hand help you avoid costly errors.
- Improve security by detecting fraud and malicious activity, and protecting your data and reputation.
As we can see, AI is already at the heart of many applications we use every day and has the potential to revolutionize many aspects of our lives and drive innovation in many areas.
However, they raise concerns among many who see them as a real threat to businesses, jobs and the environment.
One of the most famous films that already predicted this “threat” is “2001: A Space Odyssey” by Stanley Kubrick. In this film released in 1968, a supercomputer equipped with artificial intelligence called HAL 9000 (CARL 500 in French) autonomously manages the spacecraft Discovery One which transports the crew to the planet Jupiter and then « beyond infinity « . HAL is able to interact with the crew members, make decisions and solve complex problems, but he ends up rebelling against the crew, which ends up creating dramatic tension.
Since Wednesday, March 29, 2023 tens of thousands of people (18,979 as of April 9) including scientists and personalities have signed an open letter calling for an urgent pause in the creation of language models like ChatGPT.
For Elon Musk (CEO of SpaceX, Tesla & Twitter), Steve Wozniak (Co-founder, Apple), Yoshua Bengio (Turing Prize winner), Jaromír Janisch (artificial intelligence specialist at Czech Polytechnic University in Prague) … these AIs could be an “existential” issue for humanity. These personalities invite us to take a step back and reflect on the implications of these technologies.
But with the billions of dollars already invested, I can safely predict that “the AI revolution” is on and isn’t about to stop anytime soon. This call for a break will at most allow the establishment of an ethical framework for the development of AI. What I intend to contribute in this blog.
Having reviewed some advantages and disadvantages of artificial intelligence for your business, if you are wondering what the obstacles may well be that you will have to overcome to integrate them into your strategy and get the most out of them, this article is for you.
Together let’s take a look at the benefits and challenges of artificial intelligence for your business:
Internal Challenges
The quality and quantity of data available
Algorithms use large amounts of data to train properly. Incomplete, inaccurate or biased data can therefore have negative consequences on the expected results.
Most African businesses struggle to obtain reliable and quality data due to a lack of technological infrastructure, limited digitization of these businesses, and lack of data regulation and standardization.
Solution: You must therefore invest in the collection, cleaning and storage of data to ensure its quality and reliability.
The confidentiality and security of stored data
Companies collect and store a lot of sensitive data (personal information about customers, trade secrets, etc.). They must therefore take measures to protect this data against cyberattacks and privacy breaches.
Solution: Companies must also be able to demonstrate that their privacy and data security practices comply with applicable regulations.
The acquisition of technical skills
AI professionals, such as machine learning engineers and data scientists, are highly skilled and in high demand, which can make it difficult for companies looking to succeed with AI to recruit.
The lack of AI talent and skills is a major challenge for African businesses. AI-trained professionals are in short supply and companies struggle to attract and retain them due to global competition and high salaries offered by companies in developed countries.
Solution: Companies must either hire these professionals or invest in training and developing their existing employees to acquire the necessary skills.
The governance
Decisions made by AI algorithms can have a significant impact on businesses and employees.
Solution: Companies need to put in place strong governance to oversee the use of AI and ensure the transparency and accountability of decisions made by AI algorithms.
The corporate culture
AI is a relatively new technology that can cause fear and uncertainty among employees and customers. Employees may be apprehensive about using AI, fearing that automation will cause them to lose their jobs.
Solution: Companies, therefore, need to invest in communication and training to ensure that their staff understands AI and its benefits, and to build trust with their customers.
The interoperability of existing systems
Companies often have existing computer systems that have been developed over time. These systems may not be compatible with AI or other emerging technologies.
Solution: Companies, therefore, need to invest in AI-enabled technology infrastructure to succeed in this area.
External Challenges
The increasingly strict regulations
You must take into account data confidentiality and privacy regulations and standards, such as the GDPR in Europe and the CCPA in the United States among others.
Data regulation and protection are still developing in Africa.
Solution: You must ensure that you comply with privacy and data protection laws, standards and regulations before collecting and using data for your AI.
The unfavourable socioeconomic context
Socio-economic challenges, particularly in Africa, such as poverty, failing infrastructure and conflict, make it difficult to implement AI. These challenges limit the resources available to invest in advanced technologies and can affect your ability to obtain relevant data.
The high cost of acquisition, particularly for African companies
Advanced AI technologies are very expensive to set up and maintain. You will have to invest in IT infrastructure and quality software to set up AI systems.
What does this mean for you C-levels and entrepreneurs?
In my humble opinion, AI is a certain competitive advantage that companies, especially African ones, cannot ignore. The challenges mentioned above cannot and should not be used as a shield to justify why you won’t take the plunge.
On the contrary, you must absolutely find the ways and means to acquire the technology and integrate it into your strategy so as not to be taken out of the market by companies that will dare to do so.
Think of Kodak and its engineer Steve Sasson who actually invented the digital camera in the company’s R&D labs in the 1970s!
I will end by suggesting a few solutions to help you meet these challenges and benefit from all the advantages that this technology can offer:
- Develop a clear strategy for implementing AI in your business. This strategy should take into account your specific needs, costs, benefits and risks.
- Invest in training your staff to help them acquire the necessary AI skills. This can include training AI specialists, but also training all staff to understand AI issues and thus make them less suspicious.
- Put in place clear policies for managing the impacts of AI on jobs (dismissal criteria, provisions to help your employees find a new job, etc.).
- Involve trade unions and employee representatives in the decision-making and communication process regarding the use of AI and its impacts on employment.
- Collaborate with other companies and institutions to obtain quality data, share knowledge and skills, and thus reduce costs.
- Invest, if you can afford it, in research and development to discover new applications of AI and improve their effectiveness for your business.
- Explore funding opportunities such as grants, loans, and investments.
- Encourage collaboration between the public and private sectors that can allow you to access the necessary resources and infrastructure.
